Laboratory Manager for Stable Isotope Laboratory in Austria

Location: Technologiezentrum Mittelburgenland in Neutal, Austria

We are seeking a Laboratory Manager for Austria’s first commercial Stable Isotope Laboratory (www.isotope-analytic.at ), to take up the position in September/October 2012.

The laboratory will offer a wide range of services in stable isotope analysis: to verify the origin, identity and authenticity of products, to determine the source of products organic/conventional or biogenic/fossil, and to differentiate between synthetic and natural-identical additives. Further analysis will be offered for industrial applications such as batch comparison and batch quality, and to establish proof of patent infringement and imitation identification. The strategic focus of the company will initially be based on food, agricultural products and environmental applications. It is foreseen that research and development in the field of isotope labelling for product protection against fraud or discernable differentiation from competing products, will be undertaken.

General responsibilities

  • Management and technical operation of a stable isotope laboratory
  • Management and supervision of an interdisciplinary team
  • Creation and implementing of quality management system ISO 17025
  • Development, implementation and validation of new methods and on-going optimization of existing laboratory services in the field of stable isotope, GC-MS- and FTIR-analysis
  • Assisting and advising the company in all analytical matters and ensuring scientific clarification in cases of dispute
  • Developing key relationships with scientific societies and relevant authorities
  • Controlling and reporting with respect to budgetary and laboratory performance
  • Preparation of reports and offering expert opinion
  • Perform trainings/seminars

Qualifications/Requirements

  • A minimum M.S. in Chemistry or related discipline; a PhD is preferred
  • Wide experience in GCMS- and FTIR-analysis at least in one of the following fields, food, consumer products, non-food products, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, environment, medical diagnostics and/or forensics
  • Experience in IRMS-, CRDS- and ICP-MS analysis be an advantage
  • Wide experience in quality system ISO 17025
  • Excellent organizational skills with several years of successful leadership
  • Communicative personality, with very good presentation and negotiating skills
  • German and English essential; additional foreign languages beneficial.
  • Well versed in MS-Office; good knowledge of statistical programmes (e.g. Statistica, SPSS or R) would be an advantage
  • Interest in advanced and follow-up training
  • Highly committed, able to work under pressure, personal integrity, willingness to accept responsibility and in possession of good soft skills

  • Interpretation of results
  • Preparing the structure and content of industrial research proposals
  • Assisting in the creation and implementation of a quality management system ISO 17025

Qualifications/Requirements

LABORATORY MANAGER / SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University,
Singapore, is seeking applicants for a laboratory manager/senior research fellow position
within its geochemistry group. The newly established research center will construct a
trace element and stable isotope geochemistry laboratory. The facility will be equipped
with an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) and an Inductively Coupled Optical
Emissions Spectrometer (ICP-OES/AES). The lab will support research across a broad
range of disciplines, primarily focusing on environment and climate changes associated
with oceanographic processes.

The successful candidate needs to be experienced in IRMS maintenance, method
development, and data management, and will have the personal and organizational skills
to work with diverse collaborators, train students and post-docs in analytical and
instrumental methods, and process and evaluate complex data sets. The lab manager will
participate directly with a diverse array of research projects at EOS, and at the outset, will
primarily assist with laboratory setup and installation of the mass spectrometer and ICPOES.
It is a desire that applicants have a M.Ph./Ph.D. degree in geology, analytical chemistry
etc., and/or relevant experience in the use of IRMS. Salary will commensurate with
experience and qualifications.

Postdoctoral Scholar on sources and cycling of non-photosynthetic carbon in plants


The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine seeks applicants for a postdoctoral scholar position in experimental research on sources and cycling of non-photosynthetic carbon in plants. The successful candidate will work closely with Drs. Guaciara dos Santos and Kathleen Treseder to design and test hypotheses regarding the role of carbon within high plant biosilica structures known as phytoliths. The project involves working with carbon isotopes and nanotechnological particles coupled with image techniques, in addition to collaborations with the Stable Isotope laboratory team in CEREGE/France and the Soils and Sediments Analysis Laboratory, University of Wisconsin-Madison. The position will be based primarily at KCCAMS/UCI facility, but some travelling to the field and other laboratories are expected. The position will be initially for 1 year, renewable for an additional 2 years dependent on applicant personal contributions to the project and is subject to available Federal funding. Salary commensurate with qualifications.

The applicant should have, or be about to gain, a Ph.D. in biochemistry or related fields, and is expected to have some experience with phytoliths and image techniques (such as scanning electron and confocal microscopes).
